On this page you can find all the information on Vierkwart. Vierkwart is a group exhibition organized by me with the support of the Coffee Company.
It started out as a group of friends, all working in the field of illustration, wanting to organize an exhibition together. The expo was a huge success. And so I decided to continue organizing exhibitions and offer illustrators and artists a space to show their work to a big, diverse public.
Vierkwart was born and now I organize a new expo every three months, four times a year. Anyone is welcome to participate, just let me know about your work! And hopefully I'll see you at the opening party.
Latest exhibition opening: Friday 02 Sep. 2011
Time of the opening: 18.00 - 21.00 hours

Last Friday was the opening for the new VIERKWART exhibition! For this edition Eva Galesloot, Bang Phan, Bart Aalbers and Victor van Gaasbeek joined and showed some new and old artworks. The weather was great, so I think that helped a lot for the opening. A lot of people showed up (thanks guys!) to see the new artworks and have a drink in the warm sun. I think this was actually one of the only sunny and warm weekends we had here this summer. I can't believe it's already september and now the summer starts...
I hope everyone had as much fun as me and if you really liked the artworks, don't hesitate to contact the artists to maybe buy some of their work. Here are some photos of last Friday.

Yesterday everyone was running around like crazy at the Coffee Company because it was finally time to build up the new VIERKWART exhibition! Luckily we got some very nice coffee from the barista's as heavy fuel so the job was done in a couple of hours. I'm quite happy with the new artworks decorating the Coffee Company and I can't wait for the opening tonight to see people's reaction. Time for some relaxation after a job well done, let's go party! Hope to see you guys there as well.
VIERKWART exhibition opening, starts at 18.00h and ends at 21.00h. Location at the Coffee Company, Eendrachtsplein 2 Rotterdam.
Bring your friends over for some nice artwork and a fresh drink! If you want to know more about the exhibiting artists, read on!

The party starts at 18.00h and I will be at the exhibition until 21.00h when the Coffee Company closes it's doors.
I hope to see you all there again like last time. I've been quite busy lately with work, so it would be great to see everyone again and have an awesome party like last time. I'll make sure there'll be plenty of drinks and snacks, so feel free to bring along some friends. Let's end this summer with some hot new artworks and a steaming party. See you guys there!

Hey guys, I'm back from my vacation! I'm still working on the graphic novel and I can't show much of that project, so things were a little slow for a while. But I haven't been sitting still and I have a lot of other new work lined up to show you guys.
First in line is the new flyer for the next VIERKWART exhibition. The next exhibition already opens on the 2nd of September and I'm hoping all you guys can drop by so we can have an awesome buzzing party like last time. I can't wait to see all the amazing new work and I'm sure you guys can't wait either.
For now, here are some process photo's of the illustration work for the flyer.

So, after all the planning, spreading the news and putting up the artwork, the new VIERKWART exhibition finally opened it's doors! Last Friday we all gathered for an awesome opening party and the new art was revealed for the first time. Everyone seemed to have a great time and I got some really nice feedback on the new exhibition, thank you guys. And also a big thanks to Louis Reith, Rick Berkelmans (from Hedof), My Hong and Rob Kemerink for participating!
In case you weren't able to make it to the opening, don't worry, you can still see visit the exhibition until the end of August. And of course, here are the photo's of the opening party.

Yesterday we were all running around like crazy to get everything ready on time for the big VIERKWART opening today. But now that everything is set up and the new exhibition looks great, I can relax a little bit and just enjoy the day. It was very nice to meet all the artists in person and see their incredible artwork. I really like the new exhibition and I hope you guys will too. Come check us out tonight and say hi.
Rick Berkelmans (Hedof) will be selling his silkscreens at the opening tonight. So if you bring along an extra 30 EUR, you can actually leave the party with your very own silkscreen by Hedof. All the other art work will also be for sale, you can order them through the artists of via their website.
In the mean time, here is a little preview of the build-up from yesterday. A photographer will be making more pictures tonight, so if you really can't make it to the opening, you can still get a glimpse of the party.

So, Rob Kemerink just send me a photo of his freshly made giclée prints for the VIERKWART exhibition. Rob is actually the one who introduced me to the printer where we now both have our giclée prints made for exhibitions. This printer has some really nice art paper and take a look at the colors of the print!
Any way, we're building up the exhibition tonight so I'll get to see all the work in person, but I wanted to give you guys another sneak peak of the art work for the new show. So here is a little photo of a new print from Rob Kemerink.
See you guys tomorrow at the opening!

Last week the flyers and posters for the new VIERKWART exhibition came in. I was very excited to finally be able to see the huge stack of prints and spread them around. Don't they look sweet? I already got some nice feedback on the new design, so thanks guys!
I also made some pictures of the original drawing of the front of the flyer and posters. I actually drew everything by hand. It felt a bit weird to imitate the illustration style of 4 other people, but I think it came out quite oke. I just framed the A3 sized sketch and it will also be displayed at the opening of VIERKWART this Friday.
I hope to see all of you guys at the opening to take a look at the awesome new art. Just a few more days!

Some time ago Hedof send me these nice photo's of the new silkscreen prints he made for the next VIERKWART. I think they look awesome and I'm really excited they're going to be part of the exhibition next week. If you like them too, you should come take a look at them up close and personal (they're also going to be up for sale).

I can't believe the opening to the next VIERKWART exhibition is in less than 2 weeks! Where did all that time go? I'm afraid I must blame the sunny weather and the holiday season in Holland.
Never the less, preparations for the expo are still going smoothly and I figured it was time to send an invitation to everyone out there to come to the opening of the 3rd VIERKWART exhibition in Rotterdam on the 20th of May. It's right in the center next to Central Station in a the Coffee Company. The party starts at 18.00 hours and we'll be busy dancing, chatting and drinking free drinks until 21.00 hours.
Please don't be shy, just drop by to see the amazing work of Louis Reith, Hedof, My Hong and Rob Kemerink. They'll all be there to keep you company and have a drink with all our friends. We're all planning to go the the Vagabond (right next to the Coffee Company in the Nieuwe Binneweg) later on to keep the party going. The weather has been great so far, so let's all make this a Friday to not forget!
See you there guys!

He has a great feeling for design and geometric shapes. But it's the old paper and roadmaps that give his work that special touch, which I love. It gives it that nice vintage feeling, as if an artist from a long time ago was way ahead of his time and somehow produced these amazing modern design works.
He currently has a show running with Ko de Kok at the Iris Cornelis gallery, but he'll make sure to have his works ready for the VIERKWART opening in May. I can't wait! If you also can't wait that long, check out his website for more of his work: www.louisreith.com

Today I would like to announce the third participant for the upcoming VIERKWART exhibition: Rick Berkelmans, although you might know him better as Hedof. I got to know about his work through some friends and I immediately fell in love with his lively silkscreens. I always loved the feel silkscreens have and I like the way he gives his illustrations this nice vintage look.
He's been running his own studio since 2008 and I believe he's doing quite well. His work is shown in many Dutch and international exhibitions and I'm honored he wanted to join VIERKWART. Let's see what he puts together for our little exhibition in Rotterdam!

Today I'm announcing the second participant for the next VIERKWART exhibition in May. Rob Kemerink is joining us for this spring edition of the expo. You may already know some of his work from the very first exhibition of VIERKWART which we organized last year. I loved the series of animal portraits he made last time, so of course when he wanted to join in again I couldn't say no. I'm curious to see what he's going to make this time. Luckily he's also a good friend of mine, so I'll probably be able to see some of the process for his new illustrations.
Most of Rob's illustrations have a very digital and graphic feel to them but his work still comes alive through the amount of detail he puts into his illustrations. I know he works very secure and is a perfectionist to say the least. Which is important if you make illustrations which are printed on huge format. He currently has an artwork on display in het Schielandhuis in Rotterdam. For the exposition about the history of Rotterdam he made a huge 3 meter high illustration illuminated by light. It's very impressive, be sure to check it out if you're planning to visit Rotterdam.
If you want to see more of his work, take a look at Rob's website: www.robkemerink.nl

The new date for the next VIERKWART exhibition is set and today I would like to tell everyone a bit more about the first new artist participating: My Hong.
I met My Hong for the first time at the Willem de Kooning academy where we both studied illustration. She loves working with (colored) pencils and ink and anyone who knows me a little, knows I'm a sucker for traditional media. I love her delicate and detailed illustrations and in my opinion you can clearly see her Asian roots in the art she makes. She's a fresh graduate from the illustration department, but I think she has the talent to make it as an artist.
For VIERKWART she is planning to make a series of pen drawings and a series in bold colors. I'm curious and can't wait to see her final works for the exhibition. If you're curious as well, you can find more about My Hong on her website: www.myhong.nl

I would like to let everyone know that the new date for the next VIERKWART exhibition is now confirmed! The new opening will be in the sweet light of this spring on the 20th of May. Which is also 2 days before my birthday, so I'll be sure to trow one hell of a party during the next opening. Make sure you're there cause we also have a great bunch of new people exhibiting their work. I'll bring the cake and of course a lot of booze and coffee (great combination).
I'll be posting about the new participants later this week. Let's build up the tension a bit shall we?

Last Friday, after weeks of preparation, planning, emailing, drawing, flyering and much more, the big moment was finally there. VIERKWART opened it's doors to the big public! We showed everyone amazing new work, decorating the walls of the Coffee Company in Rotterdam. The opening was super fun and people were buzzing around all over the place. I think the combination of walking around to see all the art work and chat with people but also being able to sit down in big comfy chairs to have a nice drink was great. See for yourself, here are the photo's!

Since I'm organizing a new exhibition four times a year, I'm always on the lookout for some nice work to show with VIERKWART. Are you the one who has that nice work or do you know people with amazing talent? Great, send it to me!
For more information about VIERKWART just look on the VIERKWART page. It has a description about the exhibition and also shows previews of the work done for VIERKWART.

Last Monday I went to get some frames for the new prints with Erwin. It turned out to be quite an adventure and I lost a lot of time, so I didn't have time to go pick up the actual prints in Amsterdam yesterday. Thankfully Rob was so kind to pick them up for me and now I finally have them.
I can tell you, they look a-ma-zing. I'm always surprised at how beautiful giclée prints look, especially on large format. It really looks like I penciled, inked and splattered on the actual paper in front of me. What I mostly enjoy is seeing the Desert Dust illustration on big format, the size I designed it for. Looks a lot better than the small size on A4 paper or on my computer screen. I didn't know it would make such a difference, something to think about maybe?
I also have a nice stamp to professionally mark all the prints in the back. They have my name, my signature and number of print on it. These babies are going to be limited to 15 prints max. So if you want one, contact me on time please. Here you can see the signing process:
And so all my prints are ready, signed and framed for upcoming Friday. They are BIG! (70x50 cm) I was really surprised at the size because last time I had a lot of white space around the prints. Hope it will still be as impressive in the Coffee Company as it is in my living room. See you guys next Friday, I can't wait!
P.S. I'm still keeping the 3rd illustration a surprise for the opening. But if you can't make it to the exhibition, I will post it on my website the week after the opening.
Thursday, 20 January 2011 11:38
I want to keep the last illustration a surprise for the exhibition opening next week, but I also can't wait to show it to people. So here is a little (vague on purpose) photo of me drawing the last piece for the VIERKWART expo. Actually I'm not the only one doing this. Erwin Kho also posted a little preview a while back. The link is also on the VIERKWART Facebook group and you can find a bunch of extra information on the exhibition there too. So if you want you can check it out and even join the group. Now enough talking, here's the photo.

And all of a sudden I have a new website! I hope you like the new lay-out, it took me quite some time to put this all together. Thankfully I had some help from the talented David Jonas.
I would also like to take this opportunity to tell everyone about an upcoming exhibition featuring my work together with three other, very talented, illustrators from the Netherlands. The opening will be at the end of next week. So get your agenda and plan some time in to drop by on Friday the 28th of January. You can visit us at the Coffee Company in Rotterdam (Eendrachtsplein 2). We'll all be there with some refreshing drinks, showing our work on large format. If you love illustration, you should come.
I was the curator for this project and also designed the flyer.

Last week I had an expo opening with the fine gentleman and women of VIERKWART. If you want to see my work in person on large format, be sure to drop by the Coffee Company in Rotterdam. The exposition will be showing there till the end of December this year. Here are some photo's of the opening party to tease you.
